Febuary 2012 Proposed changes to procedures for the sale of ammunition to licensed shooters will have no effect on the number of drive by shootings in Sydney/NSW but will make it more difficult for licensed shooters and hunters to buy ammunition.
The legislation already restricts the sale of ammunition to persons holding a permit or firearms licence allowing them to possess a firearm that can take that ammunition. We don't want to have to carry details of all firearms registered to us whenever we go to the local gunshop to purchase ammunition, or have the shop record our name and address.
It will impose significant additional paperwork on already overburdened firearms dealers and club armourers, and make it difficult and more expensive for licensed shooters who don't own a firearm to purchase ammunition to use in borrowed or club firearms.
Obviously John Howards gun by back was a waste of Australian tax payers dollars as subsequent research indicates that the buy back has had no reduction on firearm related deaths. If criminals have the ability to acquire firearms already then sourcing ammunition should and will present no problem at all.
To make an informed decision I would urge every one to read a book written by John Lott and I urge every Australian politician to obtain and read a copy of John Lotts book. Many may read this book and say "But this is just in the USA" but is it really, can you be certain, are you prepared to accept the responsibility that the data does not apply in your region?
Law abiding licensed firearm owners are not the problem and should not be the target of further restrictions.
Why not propose that unlicensed illegal firearm use and/or supply receive a much higher degree of penalty?
I am sure no law abiding constituent would argue with that proposal?
Why not concentrate on mental health which should have been the issue from the start.
Stop disarming the good guys ok?
